Understanding the Circumstances Behind the Accusations
Sex crimes are a broad category of criminal charges involving alleged sexual or sexually explicit conduct. Sex crime accusations can be highly embarrassing and intimidating for those who are charged. Among these charges are:
- Rape
- Sexual assault
- Statutory rape (sex with a minor)
- Child molestation
- Possession of child pornography
- Indecent exposure
- Failure to register as a sex offender if previously convicted
Most sex crime cases are not about someone jumping out of the bushes and attacking someone. The circumstances are often more subtle, sometimes involving accusations of date rape (also known as acquaintance rape) and sometimes involve drug and alcohol use.
Statutory rape charges can be brought even if the accused person is also a minor, or not very much older than the alleged victim. Child molestation charges are often brought in the context of child protective services proceedings.

Sex crime charges generally arise from emotional situations where underlying issues are contributing to the allegations that are being made. In some cases, people's stories change as they process what happened or what they believe happened.
